Installing or adding a new Hard Drive

First thing to do is switch off and remove the power cable.

Then after removing the case covers locate the drive bay where the hard drive will go,Make sure you have your antistatic wrist band on.

If you are adding a second drive then try and leave a gap between the two drives for ventilation.

The following statments only apply to IDE Hard Drives

Single Drive - If this is your only hard drive then set the jumper selector to master.

Two Drives - if the new drive will be the main drive, set the jumper to master, if you want it as a secondary drive then set it to slave, The master drive will have the operating software installed IE:Windows XP,Vista or Windows 7 (when released at the end of 2009)

Alternatively you could use a separate IDE cable on the Motherboard's secondary IDE interface (see motherboard manual).

If using SATA Hard Drives each drive plugs into the Motherboard seperatly.

Once you have set the jumper, gently slide the drive into the drive bay, line up the holes (2 on each side of the drive bay) and insert the 4 fixing screws (should have been supplied with your case).

The next step is to attach the IDE or SATA and power cables.

Please not the cables will only fit one way round.

Then check all cables are inserted correctly and none have come loose while fitting the drive,

Replace the sides of your case and boot your machine up. The drive should be recognised during POST, though you can check it is present in Windows in either Device Manager which is located in Control Panel - System - Hardware, or in an Explorer window. If you have replaced your primary drive, there will be no operating system present and you will need to install one using the appropriate CD.

If this your secondary drive you will need to format the drive to use it.

You can either do this from Disk Manager, located under Computer Management in Control Panel - Administrative Tools, or by right clicking and selecting properties in an Explorer window.

If you are currently using NTFS on any other drives, then select the NTFS file system, otherwise use FAT32.
